Henry Uhr Album

Henry Uhr was an ameteur photographer. As a member of the 300th Engineer Combat Battalion, Company A, he recorded the war as he travelled from Camp White in 1943 in Oregon to Germany and the end of the war. He recorded more than 400 images and found a way to develop, print and bring them home. After the war he compiled two albums of the photographs and identified the locations and the names of his comrades in Company A. In October 2013, his son, Henry Uhr Jr., with his wife brought the two albums to the 300th reunion in Tyler, Texas. The photographs were scanned at the reunion. Over the next few months the images were organized, edited and identified and now are up on the web site in the Image Gallery. The images are arranged in seven categories; Oregon training, England training, France, Belgium, Germany, Men of Company A and his tourist photographs. You will note that many of the photographs here are scratched and with dots of dirt. This is likely because they were developed and printed by the men in the field and not in the most sterile environment of a professional darkroom so the quality can be excused. The content of this collection is remarkable because of its volume, variety, identifications and multiple locations in training, combat and on leave. We thank Henry Uhr for documenting the war from the view of a combat engineer and his son for sharing his father’s albums with us for the web site.
